About Agave Quilters Guild
Originally called Agave Needlers, we began in the spring of 1995 after a small ad was placed in the Sun Lakes Splash Newspaper, calling for interested quilters to attend an informational meeting to discuss forming a new chapter of the Arizona Quilters Guild. The meeting was held in the home of Dorrie Meehan and conducted by Jerry Hurckes. Twenty-three interested quilters attended and received information from guest speaker Kim Maus (then president) of the Arizona Quilters Guild and Marilyn Wooley (then president-elect), on how to apply for a charter and become a member of the state guild. A steering committee was formed and seven volunteers signed up as treasurer, welcome committee, programs, secretary, refreshments, chairperson, and historian.

On April 4, 1995, the first general meeting was held and those who attended completed an information sheet. Quilting experience ranged from basic beginner to very advanced, using both hand and machine quilting. A contest was soon held to pick a name for the chapter. The name Agave Needlers was suggested by Jerry Hurckes and by unanimous vote was accepted. In July, a formal request was made for a chapter charter and by August, we were informed that our chapter was official!

Today the guild is known as Agave Quilters Guild, and is made up of around 100 members who share a love of quilting, whether traditional or contemporary, pieced or appliqued, large or small. Monthly meetings take place September through May with speakers, educational classes, boutique sales, quilt shows, small friendship groups, and community service projects, all of which provide an opportunity to develop friendships, enjoy fellowship, and contribute to our community. Our December meeting is replaced by our Annual Holiday Luncheon, held at an earlier time and at a different nearby location .

Meetings:
Our general meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 1pm for two hours in the Navajo Room at Sun Lakes Country Club (Phase I). Guests are always welcome and may attend up to two meetings before deciding to join the guild. Many members conveniently meet for lunch at the onsite restaurant prior to the meeting. Many of our members are "snowbirds" who head home during the summer months, and as a result, we do not meet in June, July, and August. However, friendship groups continue to meet during the summer. Our December Holiday Luncheon is held from 11:30am to about 1:00pm and is at a different location.

During our monthly meetings, we receive a brief update from each committee chairperson; followed by our scheduled program in which an outside speaker gives a presentation; show and tell; a short break; and door prizes (not necessarily in that order). Members have an opportunity to visit with each other, sign up for educational classes and/or friendship groups, and pick up a quilt kit from the community service table to take home and sew, after which it will be donated by the guild to an organization in need. We have a designated "share table" where members can bring in sewing related items they no longer need or want. Items are placed on the table for others to take home. All leftover items are gathered up by a designated member and stored until the next meeting.

Committees:
Members are encouraged to volunteer to serve on any of the following committees. It can be as chairperson, co-chairperson, or a committee member who is there to assist in whatever way is needed.
