2007 Programs

December 2007:
Agave Quilters Guild Holiday Luncheon.

November 2007:
Shelley Swanland is our November presenter. She has written two books: Stitched Cathedral Windows and Machine Stitched Cathedral Stars. Shelley has been a guest on Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson and also partnered with RJR Fabrics making quilts that have appeared in The Quilter, Quiltmaker, McCall's Quilting, and Quilter's World Magazines. Shelley's line of patterns include designs that use easy elements of the Cathedral Window technique to create curves and chains as well as the original designs of Cathedral Windows. Shelley will be teaching her techniques to our members in a class called Black Lacquered Table Runner this month. Check out her website at shelleysstudio.com

October 2007:
Margit Kagerer grew up in the small town of Bavaria east of Munich, Germany. Her mother was her first mentor, teaching her how to sew. Margit and her husband moved to Massachusetts in 1992 for his job and it was then that she was introduced to the world of quilting. Having been a mathematics teacher, she was fascinated with geometric patterns. Now Margit works from her home studio in Carefree, AZ, and will present her trunk show to our members. Margit's quilts were included in the quilt exhibit at the Mesa Historical Museum and in a recent edition of Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine. Her specialty is small art quilts.

September 2007:
The September meeting kicks off the remainder of the 2007 Agave Quilters Guild season. True to tradition, this meeting will be a time for the sisterhood to renew friendships and share their summer projects. Our Show and Tell program will feature members' summer projects. Bring all the Show and Tell you can carry!

June - July - August: Happy Summer - no meetings were held!

May 2007
Susan Vassallo of Gilbert (formerly from Massachusetts) has made quite an impact on the world of art quilting. She has a Fine Arts degree, worked previously as a painter, and still sketches many of her ideas. In 1997, Susan made her first quilt with her mother and was soon designing her own work. Now, the art quilt is her choice of medium. Her first show was the Eastern States Exhibition where she won several ribbons. She has been exhibited at the New England Quilt Museum and has been juried into Images, a large quilt show sponsored by the NEQM. Susan is also available to us as a long-arm quilter, having several copyrighted designs. Susan held a beginning textile arts class for Agave in April that many of you attended and enjoyed.

April 2007:
Agave Quilters Guild Spring Potluck Luncheon hosted by Rita Scrivner and the Hospitality Committee. There will be a Show and Tell program by our membership.

March 2007:
Our guest Speaker is Kendra L. Maclean of KLM Trade Company in Chandler. She is a designer that produces small quilt patterns as well as quilt cards that can be found in some of our local quilt shops. Kendra had a booth at the recent Tucson Quilt Show. She will speak to us about her card design business. The cards are made of fabric and come packaged with full instructions and an envelope ready for mailing. These designs are Kendra's original or public domain designs that have been reduced to a smaller scale, and great for scrap busting. Some items will be available for purchase.

February 2007:
Rita Blocksom is a career educator whose twin passions for the Southwest and fiber arts provided the impetus for her relocation to Arizona and transition to full-time teaching of quilting and fiber arts to students of all ages. She is a past president of the Arizona Quilters Guild (AQG), and is prepared to speak to us about the benefits of our guild belonging to the state guild. There are many things that we, as a guild, could take advantage of if we were to join. For example, it would allow us to enroll in classes at half the price of a non-member. When Ricky Tims was here, a $35 fee was offered to state guild members whereas non-members paid $70. State guild members are allowed to sign up first and often fill all the available seats before it even opens up to non-members. Members are encouraged to attend this important meeting to learn more about what AQG has to offer our guild.

January 2007:
Our guest speaker is Penny Sturgis of Chandler, AZ. Penny is the designer of the Bow Tuck Tote, as well as many other purse, bag, and tote patterns. She will show many of her projects and her patterns and kits will be available for purchase. She will also have on hand some of the fabrics she has designed. Penny lives here in Sun Lakes and it will be a treat for all of us to meet her.
