2015 Programs

December 2015:
Our annual Holiday Luncheon is a catered event in the Iron Oaks Ballroom. You will have your choice of three salads entrees. Also included are rolls/butter, dessert, water, iced tea, hot tea and coffee. The Hospitality Committee has planned some delightful entertainment for the dessert portion and of course there will be wonderful table centerpieces and table favors for all who attend.

November 2015:
All members who own antique quilts, defined as quilts older than 50 years, to bring them to share with the membership. There will be a photographer on hand to document the quilt and a questionnaire on the quilt's history should owners wish their quilt to become a part of quilt history in Arizona.

October 2015:
Antique quilt expert Shirley Weagant will present an old fashioned "bed turning" of her extensive vintage quilt collection. Shirley is a recognized professional in this area and will also lecture on the care and conservation of antique quilts while she shows her collection. She feels that every quilt, old or new, antique or modern, deserves preservation of its history for the future. All quilts have a story to tell and antique quilts tell the story (history) of the women who made them and their families. Please bring your own antique quilts to share.

September 2015:
Carolyn Woods of Totally Tidy, is a well-known and respected leader in the field of home and hobby/craft organzation. She has a great deal of experience in helping quilters organize their sewing rooms and fabric stashes. To Carolyn, "getting organized means storing and arranging your stuff so that the things you use and love are convenient and accessible when you need them. It also means learning techniques and starting new habits to keep it that way." Her wonderful book entitled "Organizing Solutions for Every Quilter" is full of inexpensive ideas to help achieve a quilting/sewing space where they can work with ease and not waste time looking for something you know you have but can't find. Carolyn has worked with quilting greats such as Alex Anderson and Diana McClun, teaching them fun and creative ways to sort and store their impressive stash of fabric and notions.

June - July - August: Happy Summer - no meetings were held!

May 2015:
Our very own member Dennie Sullivan, art quilter extraordinaire, is scheduled to give us a trunk show of her many award winning quilts and also explains how to label our quilts in unique ways. Dennie is a prolific quilter who has several ribbons to her name and has contributed every year to our annual Art Quilt for the raffle at our quilt show. She is also a wonderful teacher of many classes for our guild as well as being in her 11th year as our "Agave Points" newsletter editor. Come and see her quilts and be inspired all summer long. Dennie has been a member of Agave since the early days of the group and helped form the art friendship group.

April 2015:
Sharon Schamber, Master Quilter, is one of Arizona's most honored quilters as well as being a frequent international award winner and we are fortunate to be able to see her work up close and personal. She has won too many awards to list here and is ranked as the number one long arm quilter in America. Sharon is very humble and says she is a teacher first and a quilter second. She loves seeing the light of knowledge in her students' eyes when they finally understand a new method like Piec-lique, a technique she created and perfected for quilters of all levels. Guest fee $5.

Sharon's quilt pattern collection can be found at her daughter's Purple Daisies Quilting website. If you are on Facebook, see Sharon Schamber Quilting & Embroidery.

March 2015:
Agave Quilters Guild Spring Potluck Luncheon has 115 members signed up to celebrate Agave's 20th anniversary with Jerry Hurckes, a guild founder, who will join us! Thanks go to Sandy Klouda, Connie Kolb, and their committee for their efforts in planning and organizing another great pot luck! Remember to bring your show and tell quilts. Members only.

February 2015:
Darlene Reid of Chandler has been an Agave speaker in the past and there were many requests to bring her back. For this program, she will present a wonderful Victorian Crazy Quilt trunk show on the origin and development of the Crazy Quilt both as an art form and a quilt style. Darlene calls the crazy quilt the gypsy of the quilting world because of the wonderful eclectic mix of fabric and design that is the hallmark of this type of quilting. She was recently honored with induction into the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame. In March, Darlene will teach a Crazy Quilt Workshop for our members. Sign up at the Education Table. If you ever wanted to learn all about crazy quilting, this is for you! Guest fee $5.

January 2015:
Barbara Polston of Phoenix is our program speaker and is presenting what will be a wonderful trunk show introducing us to her newest book, Quilting with Doilies: Inspirations, Techniques, and Projects. Barbara has been quilting for 20 years. She enjoys showing her quilts and has won numerous awards, including Best of Show, Best Miniature, and Best Amateur Machine Quilting. Barbara is the editor of The Quilting Quarterly and the Journal of the National Quilting Association. She has served on the Boards of Directors of the Arizona Quilters Guild, the National Quilting Association, and the Association of Pacific West Quilters. Guest fee $5.

After the meeting Barbara will have advanced copies of her book available for purchase and autographing.
