2017 Programs

December 2017:
Agave Quilters Guild welcomes Dana E. Jones, artist, quiltmaker and journalist. It was love at first sight when Dana encountered the quilts of Caohagan Island in the Phillipines. She will share the story of quiltmaking and how the quiltmakers took hold of the artform and made it their own. The pieced and appliqued quilts are a vibrant representation of the culture and life of the quilters of Caohagan Island. Dana is a former editor of Quilters Newsletter Magazine and the Studio Art Quilt Associates Journal, and is the author of Patinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island. Guest fee $5.

June - July - August: Happy Summer - no meetings were held!

May 2017:
Gary Rait, whose specialty is the restoration of treadle sewing machine cabinets as well as sewing machines, will discuss the history and care of rare and vintage sewing machines. It began as a hobby in his back yard shop after retirement. As a result of working on hundreds of sewing machines and cabinets over the years, Gary has become an expert on the history of the Singer Company. In most cases, he is able to bring machines back to working condition again. Word of mouth keeps him very busy and has also developed into doing presentations all over Arizona.

April 2017:
Agave Quilters Guild Spring Luncheon featuring a Wearable Art Style Show. Members only.

March 2017:
Penny Sturgis of Quilts Illustrated in Sun Lakes, Arizona, is scheduled. Penny is known for her multitude of quilted bag designs in all sizes and shapes. She brought samples to show and patterns for purchase.

February 2017:
At the February meeting, Mary Vaneecke, artist, author, teacher, and founder of The Mourning Project, will feature 3-D quilts and share her easy techniques for adding this unique 3-D feature to your own quilts. Her mixed media art on textiles has been exhibited in museums and regional and national shows throughout the U.S., Europe and Australia. Her work and articles have appeared in the LA Times, Quilting Arts Magazine, Machine Quilting Unlimited, the Studio Art Quilt Associates' Journal, and The Quilting Quarterly.

The same evening, the guild is offering a class taught by Mary Vaneecke. Details will be provided at the meeting on how to sign up for the class.

January 2017:
Our scheduled program speaker is Carla Scott from the Quilted Frog in Queen Valley AZ. Carla will present a trunk show of whimsical quilting patterns featuring fusible applique and piecing designed by Carla and her sister Leanne Smith. Both have designed and produced many new quilt patterns and have been vendors at the Houston Quilt Market and other quilt shows since 2003. As the Quilted Frog has expanded, Carla has become an expert longarm machine quilter. Both sisters have won several awards for their designs and longarm quilting as well as having been published in several quilt magazines.
