2022 Programs
December 2022:
Our annual Holiday Luncheon was hosted by guild members Carrol Ediss and Gail
Solway at the Palo Verde Country Club from 11:30am - 2:00pm. On the
menu was chicken & mushroom crepes, rice pilaf,
fresh fruit cup, rolls and butter OR a vegeterian pasta primavera,
along with dessert and beverages.
We had a great turnout of over 50 members.
All members received a gift at their place setting. Game and raffle
prizes were awarded. One member at each dining table took home a
beautiful
table centerpiece. The winner of the UFO challenge was Debi
Loofburrow who completed 15 projects!
November 2022:
Our guest speaker was MaDonna Baker Randt, owner of
Mad B's Quilt
and Sew in Mesa. MaDonna previously owned a quilt shop in Illinois
which helped her understand the need to create a more welcoming
space for her customers. In 2014, Mad B's (formerly Southwest
Bernina) started in a 3,000 square foot building with a sales floor,
classroom, and machine service area. They currently have a 6,400
square foot space with one of the largest quilting classrooms,
longarm classroom, full machine service and repair workshop. The
store is filled with fabric, notions, books, embroidery designs,
sewing machines, and more. Our November meeting also featured a
wonderful combination of Show and Tell and final UFO completed
projects.
October 2022:
Today's general meeting will feature a trunk show put on by our
very own Agave board members.
September 2022:
Completed UFOs were presented by members who worked to complete them
over the summer and points are being tallied. Completed quilts will
continue to be turned in at the October and November meetings.
June - July - August: Happy Summer -
no meetings were held!
May 2022:
A
UFO summer challenge was announced. Coordinated by Sharon Wilson
and Penny Peters, members will work on their UFOs over the summer
months and present their finished quilts at the September, October
and November meetings. Points will be earned based on what was
completed. If it was completed, 5 points; quilt top only, 4 points;
progress made, 3 points; and still in the same stage, 1 point for
participation. The member with the most points will receive a
special gift at the annual Christmas Luncheon in December.
April 2022:
Agave Member
Marti Kellogg, a fiber artist living in Sun
Lakes and member of The Art Quilters Friendship Group, presented a trunk show of her amazing art and collage quilts,
many of which included embroidery. Marti has been quilting since the
mid-1970s beginning with hand piecing to machine quilting. Marti has
taught art quilt classes to our members in the Oakwood Sewing Room.
She was educated in teaching and interior design and ran a
furnishings store in Seattle where she lived most of her life.
March 2022:
Lori Schlage, manager (and frequent instructor) at
35th Avenue Sew and Vac
in Chandler, is our guest speaker. 35th Ave Sew and Vac is a
woman-owned and operated business that has grown to include three
stores, an event center and website. Lori shared the latest and
greatest trends and tools in the quilting world with us. She brought
lots of new notions, fabrics, pre-cuts, and books for purchase at
20% off the entire order.
February 2022:
Justine Bishop, owner of
Modern Quilting in
North Phoenix is today's speaker. Modern Quilting opened in 2016 and
since then, the store has gained a reputation for having the latest
fabrics by top designers and manufacturers. The store also carries
fun, up-to-date patterns and books, and all the notions needed to
create stunning projects. Justine presented examples of "modern"
quilts. Justine introduced us to the whole idea of Modern Quilting
with some impressive examples. One quilt that got a great deal of
interest from our members was the "
Bohemia"
quilt by Villa Rosa Designs, a Bargello quilt using an ombre fabric.
January 2022:
Our scheduled speaker,
Bonnie Bobman, cancelled due to Covid and was replaced by
Swan Sheridan of
Swan Amity Designs in Tucson. Swan's interest in
all things textile-related began at a young age. She attempted
everything from spinning wool to cross stitch and finally decided
quilting was it. Her specialty ended up being applique because
applique can easily cover up quilting mistakes. Swan worked at Bella
Quiltworks in Tucson and began producing patterns for sale to the
public in early 2013. She regularly exhibits her work in local shows
and teaches applique classes as well as hand quilting and decorative
stitches in Tucson.
